God Grant Them Dominion Over Oz

Extremist Christians have successfully infiltrated US politics: they are doing the same in Australia

In the book of Genesis 1:28, God grants humanity “dominion” over the Earth.

And God blessed [Adam and Eve], and God said unto them, ‘Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.’

Dominionist Christians say that means Christians (by which they mean, people like themselves), and only Christians, should rule the planet. Until they do the Messiah cannot return. This dubious piece of theology is now mainstream in the US. Believers hold high office under President Trump, and in several states, including Texas. The Texas Observer writes

“Dominionism comes in “soft” and “hard” varieties. “Hard” dominionism (sometimes called Christian Reconstructionism)… explicitly seeks to replace secular government… [and constitutions] with a system based on Old Testament law… Gary North, an unapologetic theocrat … called for Christians to ‘get busy in constructing a Bible-based social, political, and religious order which finally denies the religious liberty of the enemies of God.’”

The soft variety seeks to infiltrate and control the ‘commanding heights’ of society.  This is sometimes known as the Seven Mountains movement. You can read about it here Roots of Dominionism, here Ted Cruz & 7 Mountains, and here 7 Mountains Questions.

“The seven mountain mandate says that it is the duty of all Christians to create a worldwide kingdom for the glory of Christ… The principal goal of dominion theology and the seven mountain mandate is political and religious domination of the world through the implementation of the moral laws—and subsequent punishments—of the Old Testament.”

But, but, but, I hear you cry, that’s America. We’ll never have that craziness here. Oh no? Don’t imagine Dominionists don’t exist in Australia, infiltrating government and public institutions. They have already made inroads into the LNP in Queensland and New South Wales (and are trying hard in Victoria), driving out more secular party members. Australian Apostolic and Pentecostal churches and their leaders, like Brian Houston, Margaret Court and Lyle Shelton may deny it, but they dream of smugly ascending their golden thrones and watching us burn.

“From local parents and citizens associations to regional councils, from our previously secular state schools to state government departments and even within Parliament House, Canberra, this particular clique of evangelical Christian extremists is working quietly but assiduously to tear down the division between church and state, subvert secularism and reclaim this nation for Jesus.” [Chrys Stevenson]

While Australians get worked up about Islam and the danger of shariah law, they are blithely ignoring these ‘Christaliban’ groups that want to establish an Old Testament theocratic government, every bit as repressive, violent and deranged as ISIS. Maybe because they speak English, are mostly white, and look ‘normal’. But they are anything but. These zealots, backed by a ton of money, not only from their American mentors, but rich Australian businessmen, are quietly funding and mentoring people into positions of influence and power. They have begun to storm the seven mountains.

The seven mountains which they aim to “capture for Christ” are:

  1. Education
  2. Religion
  3. Family
  4. Business
  5. Government/Military
  6. Arts/Entertainment
  7. Media

The dominionists of the New Apostolic Reformation movement aim to bring together all the disparate churches currently outside mainstream denominations into one big new religious powerhouse “to rapidly overwhelm and dominate the pre-existing Christian denominations in the world.” They work outside existing mainstream churches, claiming to have revived the older traditions of leadership by “Apostles” and “Prophets”. Hillsong Church are a major promoter of this dubious theology.

I have written before about how the Alliance Defending Freedom, one of the most lavishly funded US “Christian” organisations, which develops, trains and funds ‘Christian’ lawyers and uses the law to block and reverse progress on human rights around the world, especially LGBTI rights, and about how the ACL have launched their own local version.

You can catch a glimpse of the size and reach of this mostly unnoticed Australian infiltration effort by checking out the Christian Federation. It is run by John Lockwood of Kingdom Builders** (“Our vision sees Christian businesses of all descriptions building the Kingdom of God in the market place”) and Peter Kentley from River of Life. Kentley is also mentioned in a dominionist book: God’s Mandate for a Transforming Your Nation, by Dexter Low. P.154 says: “In Melbourne Peter Kentley gathered strategic men and women of Australia to take all the domains for the kingdom of God.” And his Marketplace Leaders Retreat is mentioned on a website called The 7 Mountains, whose front page boldly states:

Deuteronomy 1:8 All of this is the land which I, the LORD, promised to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to their descendants. Go and occupy it.

“All of this” means business, government, the works. Forget churches. The churches oppose us. Instead we send people to minister in their places of work: to Christianise businesses and government.

In service to this mission is Kently’s Marketplace Leaders Retreat, run by Bronwyn O’Brien from Port Macquarie. It’s about turning Christian businesspeople into “Mountain Dwellers” – i.e., taking the business mountain for God. She explains that she has always been a businesswoman, and never felt right separating her work from her religion.

“In 2002 I attended a Conference the speakers were, Cindy and Michael Jacobs and James Thwaites. The focus of this conference was the church in the workplace. 2003 I started receiving TGIF (Today God Is First) emails from Os Hillman of Marketplace Leaders.

In September 2007 I attended  God’s Plans @ Work conference. The main speakers were Os Hillman, Dr Peter Wagner, Pastor Che Ang Harvest Ministries and businessman John Gagliardi .  As I listened and spoke with other attendees, I felt like I had come home.  This is where I fit.

My passion is to see Christians fulfilled in their vocations as ministers of the Kingdom of God.

Work satisfaction = kingdom occupation

My mission is to change the mindset about ministry and work. To see Christians validated and empowered through encouragement to be the ministers that they have been called then to be.

Mountain dwellers.”

If I wrote up all the people she mentions this post would get far too long. They are all Dominionists, and if you click on their names you can read more about them. But one of them is worth a closer look.

John Gallgliardi (mentioned above) is founder of the Australian Christian Lobby (then known as the Christian Coalition), and produces devotional materials for the Dominionist City Harvest Church Singapore. He is now development director of the Haggai Institute*** dedicated to training

“Captains of industry, top professionals in medicine, law and education, community and political movers and shakers, church leaders from Kampala to Beijing … millions of dedicated and inspired catalytic world-changers bringing their communities and even their nations to Christ.”

In other words, a Dominionist training centre for high flyers. The Australian Christian Lobby’s Lachlan Macquarie Institute works in a similar manner, to mentor young Christians and entrench them in business and government early in their careers.

But the ACL are not Dominionist, they say, even though Lyle comes from a strongly Dominionist background and family. Chrys Stevenson  explored and exposed the Dominionist nature of the Lobby at length here.

Where’s Wally? Probably in that Lake of Fire!

Some rather dubious theology underpins all this, varying from group to group, but the basics remain the same. First there must be “a great harvest of souls” – some say one billion – which is to be led by a new generation of “apostles” and “prophets”.  To this end “Apostolic Centres” are established where people are upgraded into apostles, then sent out to establish new centres, harvest more souls, and so on ad infinitum.

A bit like the Cybermen in Doctor Who, minus the fancy technology.

At the same time, they send their apostles to claim the seven mountains of society. Once they have achieved their billion happy-clappies and established Christian Government worldwide – based on Old Testament principles – Jesus can return, The Rapture can happen, all good Christians will be bodily transferred to Heaven, while the rest of us are left behind to endure the Last Days, Armageddon, and finally, annihilation in a lake of fire. Or an eternity of torment. Something very bad, anyway.

But, but, but, I hear you cry, that’s America. We’ll never have that craziness here. Oh no? As I have shown, Dominionists exist in Australia, working hard to infiltrate government and public institutions. Australian Apostolic and Pentecostal churches and their leaders, like Brian Houston, Margaret Court and Lyle Shelton may deny it, but I’m willing to bet they dream of smugly ascending golden thrones in Canberra to watch us burn.

We panic about Islam and wildly overestimate the danger of shariah law being imposed, while blithely ignoring these groups that want to establish a theocratic government every bit as repressive, violent and deranged as ISIS. They are here, backed by a ton of money, not only from their American mentors, but rich Australian businessmen. They are quietly funding and mentoring people into positions of influence and power. But because they don’t wear robes or cover their hair, speak English, are mostly white, they slip under our radar. Racism closes our eyes and stops our ears.

They already have far more power and influence than Australian Muslims ever will, and are greedy for more still. Worse, they have the money, motivation, fanaticism and the work ethic to do it. Do I really have to spell it out? The more power and influence these people garner, the worse Australia becomes for LGBTI people. And women. And Muslims. These people are not our friends.

There is a way to fight back. Dominionists lobbyists here are pushing for “religious protections” which they could then use to discriminate against LGBTI, among others: a strategy imported straight from the USA.

Dominionists there have used the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act,  intended to support an individuals right to practice their religion, to restrict the rights of women and LGBTI (with the help of a compliant Supreme Court). A fightback is struggling to get off the ground.

“Rep. Joe Kennedy III of Massachusetts and Rep. Bobby Scott of Virginia have reintroduced the ‘Do No Harm Act,’ an amendment to the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

The Do No Harm Act essentially says that civil rights supersede any claims of religious exemptions.

Specifically, the act would limit the use of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) in cases involving discrimination, child labor and abuse, wages and collective bargaining, access to health care, public accommodations, and social services provided through government contract.”

We should be drafting and lobbying for a Do No Harm Act here, before any more spurious “religious freedom” and “religious protection” laws are enacted. Their “religious freedom” is our forced return to the closet, and permanent underclass status.

[***For those who care, according to Wikipedia, Haggai was a minor Jewish prophet. “The work of rebuilding the temple had been put to a stop through the intrigues of the Samaritans. After having been suspended for eighteen years, the work was resumed through the efforts of Haggai and Zechariah. They exhorted the people, which roused them from their lethargy, and induced them to take advantage of a change in the policy of the Persian government under Darius I.”  You can see the connection.]
