The Never-Ending French Revolution rolls on

My French teacher explained to me that if you want to understand modern France, you have to remember that the country is still irreversibly split between those who support the French Revolution and those who don’t. The losers are out in force again trying to stop same-sex marriage.

Some of the submissions made to the Australian Senate committee examining the Exposure Draft of the government’s planned changes to anti-discrimination law make very disturbing reading. Especially when they come from nominally ‘Christian’ organisations that want to play ‘Bad Samaritan’ and turn their backs on LGBTI seniors in need of care.

But looking into the issue on my The Rainbow Report, I found that there are plenty of Christians in the business – and non-religious providers too – who are far far better than that. The podcast can be downloaded by clicking here.

One thing, however, stood out. While the largest secular and the largest religious aged-care businesses are both working hard to get to grips with gay and lesbian residents, they haven’t a clue about trans* people.

Trans* journalist Kate Doak (follow @katedoak on twitter) broadcast on this in a radio show on fbi Sydney 94.5 – well worth a listen. There’s also an LGBTI Heath Alliance Report here. Much more work to be done.

Meanwhile the AFL continues to toss our community a few crumbs from it’s table. It really is well past time for them to stop with the PR gestures and commit to something substantive.

President Obama’s second inauguration is turning out to be as contentious as the first. Once again he invited  notably anti-gay clergyman to officiate – though why they need a clergyman at all escapes me – but this time, the divine has had the sense to pull out.

The ravening Christaliban horde immediately branded the gay community, who had protested Louie Giglio’s inclusion in the ceremony, as the “intolerant-homosexual-fascist-bullies-at-big-gay”.

Another well-seasoned bigot, Scott Lively, currently on trial in the US for crimes against humanity for his promotion of the Ugandan ‘Kill Gays’ Bill, has been invited to debate at that supposed pinnacle of rational discourse, the Oxford Union.

Quite what they will make of a man so anti-gay that he blames Noah’s Flood (which he claims is literal truth) on the composition of gay wedding songs.  Next time it gets dry in the outback, remember, all you have to do is stage a big gay wedding. With lots of songs.
