Kremlin Walls, Moscow

Ian Hunter, the social inclusion minister for the state of South Australia, got tired of waiting for Australia’s backward politicians to legalise equal marriage and got married in Spain. He was disappointed that his marriage to artist Leith Semmens wouldn’t be recognised in Australia.

There have been several instances of people blocking protests by the Westboro Baptist Church, but nearly 300 people dressed as zombies drowning out the church members in DuPont has to be one of the best. Fave placard?  “Drink The Kool-Aid Already!”

With Ugandan homophobia taking a holiday till February, Nigeria has stepped in to fill the gap, chasing a law to jail all gays and their supporters.

In case you were wondering why Africa has suddenly turned murderous against LGBTI people, the cause lies on another continent – America. Frustrated by the gains in gay rights back home, the rabid right-wing Christaliban churches have exported their homophobia to Africa.

As the rise in HIV infections made news in Australia, the US Centers for Disease Control announced a drop in the US stats: except for young gay men.

New infections among young gay and bisexual men (ages 13-24) continued to rise sharply (by 22% comparing 2008 to 2010). Young, black gay and bisexual men continue to bear the heaviest burden and now account for more new infections than any other subgroup – a total of 4,800 in 2010.

Russian protestors were pelted with rotten eggs when they staged a kiss-in outside the Moscow parliament. Gay rights leader Nikolai Alexeev described the events as ‘medieval’.  The State Duma postponed debate on the bill to make it illegal to “provide minors with information on homosexuality,” until the new year.

Let’s hope they think better of it before then.
