Freshly Doug Monday

Bushfire, Lake Repulse / Meadowbank, Tasmania, Jan 4 2013

Another hot day: thoughts go out to friends nearby in the Daylesford area of Victoria, especially Jim, whose farm has been badly damaged by fire before, and Patrick, who moved from the city and joined his local Country Fire Brigade. Fingers crossed guys, and take care. You are precious to us.

Others in danger include gays in Uganda, as we’ve been reporting for months. UK Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills had to flee in fear last time he went to the country to report: now it’s just too unsafe to do a follow-up.The fight to stop the draconian ant-gay bill goes on, with Sexual Minorities Uganda striking at the source of the infection, taking on US anti-gay campaigner Scott Lively on in the American courts..

A dangerously irresponsible and increasingly unbalanced Pope continues to whip up anti-gay sentiment, painting himself and his commanding cadre into a smaller and smaller corner. Now he is also turning on agnostics, whom he has previously praised.

More lunatic intolerance coming out of America, where parents are fighting against the introduction of yoga into schools on the grounds that it is bringing in Hindu spiritual indoctrination by stealth.

What you won’t find taught in most schools, whether in the UK, the USA or here, is proper comprehensive sex and relationships education. Too often it’s farmed out to thinly-disguised evangelical organisations preaching strict abstinence until marriage and exclusive heterosexuality.

Even fairly liberal sex-ed short-changes LGBTI kids: we need to get proper non-judgemental sex and relationship education firmly into the national curriculum, taught to a national standard by properly qualified staff.

Cardinal Pell loves the French for marching for traditional marriage, forgetting that France has the kind of strict separation between church and state we should be campaigning for here. Perhaps he would also like this French car.
