Well, well, well, if it isn’t our old friends ‘Doctors For The Family’. They keep turning up like the bad pennies they are. My most excellent colleague Chrys Stevenson aka Gladly The Cross-Eyed Bear has unearthed another of these moral paragons. But first, some background on this merry band of physicians.
The Doctors first came to public notice when they made a submission to the Senate Enquiry into marriage equality, strenuously opposing it, and backing their case with screeds of discredited pseudo-science.
As a result, one of their number, Professor Kuruvilla George, a Victorian Human Rights Commissioner, and Deputy Chief Psychiatrist of the state of Victoria no less, had to resign his posts.
After all, you can hardly be a senior member of a body responsible for promoting equality, while arguing publicly against the ‘normalisation’ of homosexuality. Oddly, George didn’t seem to see this as a problem until it was pointed out to him.
Then there’s Dr David Van Gend, who is chasing Barnaby Joyce’s shortly-to-be-vacated Senate seat. This little charmer – another virulently anti-gay ‘Christian’ – has ‘survived the LNP’s vetting process’, which neatly demonstrates the quality of the current LNP selectors. If you want to know more check out this critique of the good doctor on Crikey.
Now along comes another of these pillars of moral rectitude. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Dr Catherine Lennon, a Doctor For The Family, devout Catholic, and staunch opponent of voluntary euthanasia. But the way she goes about her business is . . . well, as my most excellent colleague Chrys Stevenson aka Gladly The Cross-Eyed Bear writes:
” Dr Catherine Lennon; a woman who shows the lengths to which religious zealotry can drive a person to simultaneously believe they are supporting all that is good, Christian and moral, while acting in a way that is completely contrary to any Christian ethic as I understand it.”
