Bairnsdale Money Machine

Following yesterdays post about the anti-G.A.Y.* history of the Bairnsdale Advertiser, lots of people asked, is there any way we can fight back? Appeals to the Press Council and the local Rotary failed: not surprising since the founder and President-elect of Sunrise Rotary is… owner and managing editor of the Bairnsdale Advertiser, Bob Yeates. His contact details are at the bottom of this post.

A local petition failed to have any effect: in fact, the paper denied they received many of the complaints sent to them.

But yes, there is a way. Go after their sources of income, including advertisers in the paper and clients of the family business empire, which appear to include the Victorian Government.

Make them aware of the hatred they are subsidising. And ask them to stop. I once riled the AFL by writing to Toyota and asking “Why are you subsidising homophobia?” Believe me, the AFL noticed. So, here’s a brief guide to the businesses that need to be targeted if you want to have an impact.

You need to buy a sub to read their papers online, which makes it impossible to see who their advertisers are, but if you get the paper, maybe you could pop a list into the comments below? The guides, however, are free online.

The Bairnsdale Advertiser is only one small part of a large local printing and publishing business run for four generations by the Yeates family. They own the publishers, the East Vic Media group, and the printers, James Yeates Printing. The owner and Managing Director/Editor of the paper is R.D. (Bob) Yeates (for contact details, see below).

The newspapers are

  • Bairnsdale Advertiser
  • East Gippsland News
  • Snowy River Mail
  • Lakes Post

You can contact the editorial division of the company here. Make sure you take a screenshot of your communication: they don’t seem to be terribly good at keeping track of correspondence received. You can also contact the company here via Facebook

As well as newspapers they also publish

The East Gippsland Official Guide seems to be a Tourism Victoria project, so that’s where the money would ultimately be coming from: there’s an address on the guide website

There are three other wholly owned companies sharing the same address and phone number:

  • James Yeates Printing and Design
  • James Yeates Publications
  • Y Media

James Yeates Printing and Design prints the newspapers and guides, flyers, business stationery and cards, books, full color promotional brochures, and posters.

Y Media does websites for local businesses (including one of the guides), and the Wedding Expo.

About the author

Veteran gay writer and speaker, Doug was one of the founders of the UKs pioneering GLBTI newspaper Gay News (1972) , and of the second, Gay Week, and is a former Features Editor of Him International. He presented news and current affairs on JOY 94.9 FM Melbourne for more than ten years. "Doug is revered, feared and reviled in equal quantities, at times dividing people with his journalistic wrath. Yet there is no doubt this grandpa-esque bear keeps everyone abreast of anything and everything LGBT across the globe." (Daniel Witthaus, "Beyond Priscilla", Clouds of Magellan, Melbourne, 2014)
